CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY TRIP

On November 29th, Site Stories visited the Contemporary Art Gallery of Vancouver.

Here we were met  by Holly and her staff, and given detailed tours of the work of:
Guillaume Leblon, entitled: UNTANGLED FIGURES

CAG staff explain aspects of Guillame's work. All of which was made on a 3D printer.
Guillame's sculptures were made from 3D printing, and are all representative of 'parts' of the human anatomy.
Students sketched and reflected on what they were seeing: partial structures, detached clothing, a purposeful space with 'unfinished' flooring....

Light reflected, windows created: Guillame uses a projected film to create a sense of 'space' in the room. (Note the lifted floor board)

Inside the second room the piece is entitled, "Child of Vision" and is a sculpture made of both the artist's sons: the body is therefore disproportional to its head. Students gathered around and were asked to sketch this sculpture.

Holly Schmidt, CAG curator and our guide for the outsider portion of the exhibit, discusses the use of space and highlights the purpose of several of the objects in the window displays such as the plates below, and the window painting on Davie Street Skytrain seen below.

Students are asked to examine the text and understand the audience and the implications.

Students have a chance to look at how 'found objects' can be art in the several window displays found at the CAG on Nelson Street.

This was a great thing to experience going to a gallery like this really opens your mind to what art is and what it can be. It was inspiring to be able to see these different art works and learn how this artist completely changed the gallery to express how he wanted his art work to feel. And what he wanted it to feel like when you are walking through his gallery. This gallery really helped me to figure out what I wanted to do in this site story project. which in the end was a sound map.

I'm loving the daydream-like inspirations for this project..."if you can think it, you can create it" and how this promotes originality and critical thinking on all levels. As students move through the process from planning and design and execution it's been extremely rewarding to be a part of the creative process with them and see them taking more control of their projects.

despite not being able to go to this "event" I have seen all of the pieces by the photos posted on the gallery's website. there is one piece that the artist made a cast of his six year old son this includes areas in that should not be cased by a father or any one for that matter, and the head is replaced with with a cast of his 12 year old son, needless to say the statue looks like it is disappointed in it's father's life decisions.

Not being able to attend this field trip I missed out on the experience the others had, but from the many class discussions, I have been exposed to the experience that everyone had and have a pretty good idea of what it was about. This field trip looked very interesting and and looked as if it would help people struggling with their project to come to a conclusion.

The art was great and I saw a lot of art that I thought was very unique. The art opened my mind on how art can take many forms. Many of the things I saw were very creative and inspiring. The art gave lots of inspiration and ideas. Overall the art was very innovative and impressive.

The trip in the gallery is great. I've never been to a gallery like this one before. Although we just visit two exhibition rooms, but those gave me more knowledge. The broken body and the special room for the artwork is opening my mind. The boys sculpture in the other room as well, I was so amazing when I know it was made by a father use plaster with his son’s help. It’s a memorable trip.

This field trip was really interesting. I was so surprised when we get there that this gallery was really different from the other galleries. I have been to the VAG (Vancouver Art Gallery) before, and the art were not exhibit like this. In CAG, all creative sculptures were in an optional spot in a big empty room. They really opened my mind, and let me realized that every little thing in our lives are all arts.
